Castello di Cordignano

The well-kept remnants of the Castle of Cordignano are inserted in a magnificent panoramic background scattered with hills and vineyards. The curtains of the castle, mentioned for the first (and only) time in 1233, feature intact battlements and scaffolding holes, probably connected to a wooden walk-wall. The Romanesque wooden defensive structures in the front part of the castle make it possible to compare the curtains to similar examples dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The curtain is comprised between two towers of more recent construction: one was inspired by Verona or Ferrara buildings, and dates back to the 14th century. The other was designed to protect the castle from fire weapons attacks, and was probably built around the first half of the 15th century. The area hosting the great residential buildings of the local noble family is clearly separated from the wider outer area; a similar distinction is often seen in other castles of the Treviso province.
